As of April 1, 2015, employers must ensure that specific workers complete fall arrest training courses before they can work at heights.  These courses must be delivered by an approved training provider.

Fall arrest training in Ontario is mandatory for workers on construction projects that use any of these fall arrest methods:

• travel restraint systems
• work belts or safety belts
• fall arrest systems
• safety nets

If any of these apply to your employees then fall arrest training in Ontario is requirement for them. Workers that completed the fall arrest training program prior to Apr. 1, 2015 have a two-year transition period.

Those workers will have had to successfully complete an approved fall arrest training course before April 1, 2017. Refer to subsection 26.2(1) of the Construction Projects Regulation.  Prior to working at heights greater than 3 Metres (9.84 Ft.) it is mandatory for employees that have not had training to complete their course

Fall arrest Training – Ontario’s Objective

Falls are the prime cause of fatalities and a leading cause of lost time injuries In the Ontario construction industry.  The primary objective of the program is to make construction sites a safer place to work.  Education is the key.  A Ministry of Labour approved fall arrest training program will help to protect your employees and your company.  Your workers will gain valuable insights about fall hazards and safe working practices to apply when working at heights. Students will learn to identify possible fall hazards and those steps required to reduce or eliminate the risk of falls at your workplace.  They will learn how to use applicable fall arrest equipment.
